Gout and Diabetes

Rheumatic gout, or commonly referred to as gout disease course is one form of the disease that attacks the joints (arthritis) caused by high levels of uric acid. Data WHO said, Indonesia is the 4th in the world's most widely suffer from gout. Uric acid is known in Indonesia affects approximately 35% of men under 34 years old according to the Bulletin of Natural.

Research shows that patients with uric acid were significantly more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than non-sufferers of gout.

A number of research papers have shown an association between gout and diabetes type 2 including a study from Harvard Medical School, published in 2014, which showed 70 uric acid is associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.

According to the findings of a new study are consistent with previous investigations, elevated uric acid levels associated with an increased chance of suffering from diabetes, but uric acid levels decreased after diabetes is diagnosed.

The researchers, led by Elizabeth Selvin, PhD, of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, analyzed data from 11 134 participants in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study (ARIC) study who did not have diabetes at study enrollment. Each 1 mg / dL increase in uric acid was associated with a 18% increased risk of diabetes were significant after adjusting for potential confounders. The relationship remained significant even after adjusting for levels of glucose and fasting insulin. The researchers reported online before it is printed in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Symptoms of gout

Gout disease is characterized by swelling of the joints. The base of the big toe is the most commonly affected by gout. Even in some people, gout can affect more than one joint.

Symptoms can come quickly, with swelling occurs within a few hours. Swollen joints can be very painful and sensitive to touch. During the swelling, the skin covering the joints might normally turn red and looks shiny.

Swelling and symptoms can occur for a few days if not treated. Once the inflammation subsides, the skin on the joints can become itchy and scaly.

The cause of gout

Gout occurs when high levels of uric acid in the blood cause sodium urate crystals to form in and around joints. If the crystal is spilled into the joint space, this can lead to inflamed joints.

Risk factors

High levels of uric acid is more likely to occur if you have the following risk factors:

A family history of gout sufferers

Obesity

Medical conditions that cause increased levels of uric acid

A diet high in purines

Medical conditions that can cause high uric acid levels, including hypoparathyroidism, leukemia, nephrolithiasis, and renal failure.

The food was very high in purines include:

Animal offal

Sardine

Teri

Sauce

Other foods that are relatively high in purines such as red meat, oily fish, spinach, asparagus, beans, lentils, oatmeal and oat bran.

Rheumatic gout has symptoms similar to rheumatoid arthritis (rheumatoid arthritis) that required further testing to determine whether uric acid as a cause of inflammation.

Diagnosing gout

The best method of diagnosis is to test for the presence of uric acid crystals in the joints affected. A needle is driven and synovial fluid collected from joints and examined, under the microscope, to determine levels of sodium urate.

Blood tests, x-rays and ultrasound scans can also be used to diagnose gout.

Treat gout

Treat gout involves measures to prevent gout attacks and treatment when the attack occurred.

Low-purine diet is recommended to prevent or reduce the risk of gout. Avoid foods high in purine. Milk, eggs and fruit and vegetables, including low or relatively low-purine. Avoid alcohol and foods sweetened drinks because it can increase the risk of gout. Try to drink 1.5 liters of water a day.

Treat and handle the gout attack

If an attack of gout occurs, treatment will aim to reduce inflammation and pain and may include medication or treatment itself.

You can use an ice pack to cool the joint but do not put ice directly to the skin and do not use an ice pack for more than 20 minutes so as not to damage the skin.

Immediately take medication to treat your inflammation. Consult with your doctor before to find a drug that is most suitable for you in treating gout attack.

Conclusion

People who have high uric acid levels, including people who are younger, have a higher risk of developing diabetes. People who suffer from gout are expected to perform preventive maintenance to avoid diabetes and related conditions.
